Julian Fellowes reveals his exciting ‘Downton Abbey’ spin-off series ideas

The Downton Abbey movie has been a smash at the box office in cinemas around the world.

Based on ITV’s hit period drama series, the much-anticipated film finally arrived in September.

Downton creator Julian Fellowes has already been asked to start writing a follow-up and star Hugh Bonneville has speculated that the franchise could “run and run.”

While it’s expected that our next visit to the Downton world will be in a second movie, there has also been talk about a spin-off series on television.

Julian Fellowes has now added fuel to these rumours, responding to a fan on the official Downton Abbey Twitter account.

He said: “I could see Carson and Mrs. Hughes running a modest hotel, for instance.”

Fellowes also suggested there was potential for a spin-off series based around “Edith and Bertie, or now Branson who has got this new life.”

However, it looks like it probably wouldn’t be the Downton creator himself who would write the show.

He commented: “Whether they’ll be explored by me is a different question.”

Fellowes is probably far too busy working on his long-delayed American series The Gilded Age.

With one major Downton star hinting that she won’t return for a sequel, maybe a spin-off focusing on a smaller selection of characters might be the best way to go.

In the meantime, Julian Fellowes fans have his new period drama series Belgravia to watch.

The Downton Abbey movie is available on DVD on Amazon.
