‘Sherlock’ star is unrecognisable as Larry Grayson in ‘Nolly’ drama

We’ve got our first look at Mark Gatiss in Nolly!

Best known for playing Mycroft in Sherlock, the English actor and comedian shot to fame in The League of Gentlemen.

He’s gone on to appear in the likes of Wolf Hall, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Dracula, and last year’s Operation Mincemeat.

Next up, Gatiss will be starring as iconic ’70s TV presenter Larry Grayson in ITVX’s Nolly.

Created by writer Russell T Davies (It’s a Sin, A Very English Scandal, Years & Years), the upcoming three-part drama tells the story of Crossroads actress Noele Gordon.

Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech, The Crown) is leading the cast of Nolly as the titular ‘Nolly’.

Bonham Carter will be joined by Augustus Prew (The Morning Show) as Noele Gordo’s Crossroads co-star Tony Adams. alongside Con O’Neill (Happy Valley), Tim Wallers (Belgravia), Richard Lintern (Silent Witness), Antonia Bernath (Downton Abbey), Clare Foster (The Crown), Chloe Harris (The Spanish Princess), and Lloyd Griffith (It’s A Sin).

Crossroads was a British soap opera that ran from 1964 to 1988, famously parodied in Victoria Wood’s Acorn Antiques sketches.

Set in the early 1980s, Russell T Davies’ mini-series will explore “the all-powerful reign, and fall from grace, of the inimitable Noele Gordon, TV legend and Queen of the Midlands, the darling of the establishment until it turned on her and betrayed her.”

Gatiss seems like great casting as The Generation Game host Larry Grayson.

Born in 1923, the presenter was well known for his high camp English music hall humour and his familiar catchphrase, “shut that door.”

We’ve got another pic of Gatiss as Grayson here:

The official synopsis for Nolly reads: “Noele (or Nolly to her friends) was a legend in her own lifetime. As flame-haired widow Meg Richardson in the long-running soap opera Crossroads, she was one of the most famous people in Britain.

“Then in 1981, at the height of the show’s success and the peak of Nolly’s fame, she was axed without ceremony, without warning and with no explanation.

“With the boss’s words “all good things must come to an end” ringing in her ears, Noele Gordon found herself thrown out of the show that was her life for over 18 years.”

All three episodes of Nolly will premiere in the UK on Thursday 2nd February, streaming on ITVX.

ITV’s new streaming service launched in December, debuting Damian Lewis’ Cold War drama A Spy Among Friends, and period drama The Confessions of Frannie Langton.

Nolly will also get a traditional primetime airing on ITV1 in the coming months.

It’ll air in the US later this year on PBS.

A Very English Scandal is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
