‘The Last Kingdom’ reveals epic trailer for final season: ‘This is where the journey ends’

The first trailer for the new season of The Last Kingdom has arrived!

The trailer release follows this week’s Season 5 premiere date announcement.

Set in the late 9th century AD, when England is divided into seven separate kingdoms, the epic historical drama series is based on the Saxon Stories novels by Bernard Cornwell.

The Last Kingdom launched seven years ago on BBC Two and BBC America, before moving to Netflix for its third season.

The final 10 episodes finished filming last summer in Hungary, Budapest.

The official synopsis for Season 5 reads: “Years have passed since the events of the last season, and King Edward is still forging ahead with his ambitions to unite the Saxon Kingdoms to fulfil his late father’s dream.

“Although a long-standing peace between Danes and Saxons now exists, that harmony is under threat. Not only by a new Danish invasion but a Saxon rebellion. Uhtred has been entrusted with protecting Edward’s illegitimate son, the future King of England, Aethelstan.”

Season 5 premieres on Netflix around the world on Wednesday 9th March.

The show’s last ever run of episodes is based on the ninth and tenth books in Bernard Cornwell’s 13-part seriesThe Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.

Joining the cast are several new faces, including Patrick Robinson (Sitting in Limbo) as Father Benedict, Sonya Cassidy (Humans) as Eadgifu, and Harry Gilby (Tolkien) as Aethelstan.

While the fifth season will sadly be the show’s last, are currently busy shooting Last Kingdom spin-off film!

Producer Nigel Marchant explained last year that while the upcoming Season 5 finale will “fully concludes the series,” the makers of The Last Kingdom decided “there was always one more story that we wanted to tell.”

We’ll just have to wait and see what that story is…

Titled Seven Kings Must Die, the movie set to premiere in 2023 on Netflix.

The Last Kingdom is available on DVD on Amazon.
