‘The Larkins’ Season 2 Episode 2 recap: What happened in ‘The Trap’?

The Larkins is back for a second season!

ITV’s hit comedy-drama is based on the novels by H.E. Bates, with scripts by The Durrells creator Simon Nye.

The books were previously adapted as The Darling Buds of May, which ran for three seasons in the early 1990s.

The Larkins follows the golden-hearted wheeler dealer Pop Larkin and his wife Ma, together with their six children, including the beautiful Mariette, as they bask in their idyllic and beautiful patch of paradise in Kent in the late 1950’s.

Starring Bradley Walsh (Doctor WhoLaw & Order: UK) and Joanna Scanlan (Notes on a Scandal) as Pop and Ma, the show launched last autumn.

The Larkins now returns with six brand new episodes, set in the summer of 1959.

Season 2 is expected to arrive later this year for American viewers on Acorn TV.

Here’s a plot recap for the second episode of Season 2, ‘The Trap’, which premiered on ITV at 8pm on Sunday 23rd October 2022:

Pop tries to make peace with their troublesome neighbours the Jerebohms by inviting them to a lavish barbecue. Primrose is off to church with Ma to woo Rev Candy and invite him along too.

The barbecue is a proper Larkins knees-up and turns rather bacchanalian with Angela Snow and the Brigadier letting off steam… Pinkie Jerebohm lets slip to Pop that her marriage is a nightmare, her husband a brute.

The communal wheelbarrow race, intended as innocent fun, proves divisive, and when Rev Candy ends up in a romantic clinch with Primrose he makes a dash for it.

Meanwhile Ma “borrows” her genius daughter’s essay on country life and manages to get it into print in the Mid Kent Times, which earns Primrose the offer of a job.

But the good news is overshadowed – Mr and Mrs Jerebohm are on a covert mission, helped by Pop’s nemesis Alec Norman, to destroy the Larkins. Exploiting Pop’s generosity and bonhomie, they set him a trap.

Pop is arrested for burglary and carted away in a police car.

The Larkins is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
